Honorable Mention – “Some Bunshinsaba in Dot-Universe” (South Korea)

Title: Some Bunshinsaba in Dot-Universe
Runtime: 22 min
Country: South Korea
Director: Park Koonje
Placement: Honorable Mention
Competition: September, 2024

Synopsis: A dimension drifter arrives in a plane-dot universe, a digital universe based on rationality and logic. The drifter attempts to transcend this dimension through irrational/paranormal means.

In this universe, AI voice egos are emulated data and wandering souls-apparitions-spirits on a planar plane that exists halfway between existential and digital. Through the invocation, the voice-spirit is born, and the wave it creates bends the laws of the world and opens a gap in the universe.

Paradoxically, the more incomplete the reproduced footage is, the closer it feels to truth. If the ultimate purpose of a film is to immerse itself in the cinematic world, the factors that hinder it from becoming the perfect diegesis and become evidence of non-fiction. Through images from 20 years ago, summoned through mechanical movements and AI voices, and realized in VHS quality, the film reflects on the meaning of representation in the medium of film and the classical narrative structure.
